    Situation Update No. 1
    Posted:2011-01-19, 03:44:31 [UTC]
    Ref.no.: BH-20110119-29231-USA

    Situation Update No. 1
    On 2011-01-24 at 03:57:05 [UTC]

    Event: Biological Hazard
Location: USA State of South Dakota Yankton

Situation: 200 dead birds falling out of the skies over Yankton, South Dakota is nothing to worry about according to the USDA. The dead bird event this time around has a perfectly good explanation. About 10 miles away from Yankton is a feed yard that was being “terrorized” by approximately 5000 starlings. The birds were defecating in the feed meal, “posing a threat to animals and farm workers,” according to the Daily Mail. The USDA decided a mass poisoning would take care of the problem. The 200 birds falling from the skies over Yankton managed to make a 10 mile flight before falling dead onto Yankton’s roads and lawns. The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) decided a mass poisoning would be the way to rid the problem of the “terrorizing birds,” according to The Daily Mail. The officials were surprised when they heard the birds made it ten miles before dying. The birds ate bait that was laced with poison.

The USDA said this dead bird event in South Dakota poses no threat to humans or other animals. The dead birds in South Dakota were first thought to have been victims of the brutally cold weather, and was thought to have been another bird event in the mass animal die off, until the USDA contacted Yankton’s officials.

The fish were found Monday near the beach house in Cedar-By-The-Sea, a short distance from the beach north of Boat Harbour where Will Meeks found a large number of dead herring on Friday. Brenda Spence, a spokeswoman for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, speculated early Monday -- before the latest discovery -- that sea lions eating through nets used in the food and bait herring fishery in the Georgia Strait was the likely cause of the first incident. She said fishermen involved in the small fishery reported problems with "mammal predation" on their nets late last week. Spence said some fishing boats had holes cut in their nets, with sea lions the probable culprits, which allowed herring to be released near Cedar. She speculated that this was the cause of the dead herring found Friday. Commercial herring fisherman Paul Kershaw said it's likely both incidents are connected to the ongoing food and bait fishery. "Having fish die in the catching process is a part of all commercial fisheries and we're speculating that this is the most likely cause because of the proximity of herring boats to Cedar at the time, with some reporting problems with sea lions," Spence said.

The fish, which were mostly sucker fish with some brown trout, were discovered by Fort Collins resident Bob Jackson. Jackson immediately informed local authorities, who sent out representatives from the department of wildlife. “I walked the shoreline on the north side of Willox and took some samples that I turned into the health lab,” said Shane Craig, district wildlife manager and game warden for Fort Collins. Craig said the fish most likely swam into the irrigation ditch as the temperatures turned mild and became trapped in the canal after being released from the Horsetooth Reservoir. When the water levels in the canal dropped, so presumably did the oxygen levels, Craig said. “We’re pretty confident (the cause) is just low oxygen levels,” Craig said.

'It is an ordeal for them to be exposed stranded like that and be exposed in the sun,' Conservation Department spokeswoman Trish Grant said. 'Unfortunately some just do die.' 'We'd be optimistic that there are surviving whales tomorrow that we can refloat.' The stranding occurred at Farewell Spit on Golden Bay, about 150 kilometres west of the tourist city of Nelson. Local residents initially reported about 30 whales were stranded and the number grew through the afternoon. About 100 department of conservation staff were working to keep the whales cool and hydrated in the afternoon sun, Grant said. The next high tide is due around midnight but it would be too dangerous to refloat the whales then and staff have wait until the morning again to carry out the rescue attempt. Grant said: 'It's something that has occurred reasonably often in Golden Bay with pilot whales, and just even the shape of the bay could mean they kind of get a bit caught with the spit coming round, so it could just be navigational error.' Pilot whales up to six metres long are the most common species of whale seen in New Zealand waters.

The skipper of the Dolphin Watch Ecotour catermaran has been stood down although the tourism operator says tours will continue. Senior Sergeant Peter Payne, of Picton, said two people had been flown to Wellington Hospital by Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter while six others have been taken by road to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim. An Outward Bound spokesman said the passengers were of all ages and from all around New Zealand. A passenger on the Dolphin Watch Ecotours boat, Alison Kelso, from Nelson, said the catamaran was about 20 minutes out of Picton heading towards Motuara Island in the Queen Charlotte Sound when the two boats collided about 2.30pm. The catamaran had 18 people on board and the cutter had 11. Mrs Kelso said she was standing facing Picton when she felt a huge thud in her back. Two children were thrown onto the deck. There were people screaming everywhere, she said. The cutter was partially submerged, but people all had life jackets on. Boats nearby rescued people from the water. Three ambulances, the Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade, and police are in attendance. Dolphin Watch Ecotour co-owner Paul Keating said the well-known Picton man was an experienced captain with a long history in the area. He has been stood down pending a Maritime New Zealand investigation into the incident. "From a company point of view anyone involved in a collision has to be stood down. It's very traumatic and we have to let people off to deal with that," Keating said. The skipper was not the same person in charge of the Dolphin Watch boat when an Australian tourist was injured by a propeller in December. That skipper had been fired. Outward Bound chief executive Trevor Taylor says he is still trying to piece together what happened but he believed the cutter had now sunk. He says staff are working on contacting the family of the students involved.

February 3, 2011 - Another Huge Fish Die-Off in Brazil.

“Several tons of painteds, pacus, golden, cacharas and even stingrays are floating dead in the Rio Negro River.”
    - Estadao.com.BR/Planeta

    [IMG][IMG]

Tons of fish died this week in the Rio Negro tributary of the
Amazon River near Aquidauana in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul westof Sao Paulo, Brazil. A month ago between December 30, 2010 and January 4, 2011, fifteen tons of sardines, croaker and catfish washed up dead on the coast of Paranagua, Parana, south of Sao Paulo. No explanation has been forthcoming about the early January 2011 die-off.

Currently, environmental authorities in Brazil are trying to attribute the current massive die-off in the Rio Negro
to pollution from ash caused by people setting fires to clear

"The animals that died were aged between 1 and 6 months," an official from the provincial Livestock and Fisheries Sector, Mr Phuangsavath Phommasy, told Vientiane Times during a telephone interview. According to a laboratory investigation into the cause of death, the animals did not die from foot-and-mouth disease [FMD] or as a result of the recent cold weather but from a mouth infection. Animals from 9 villages in Aed district have been infected with the disease. The district is located in the north of Laos and shares a border with Viet Nam. Locals said the disease had broken out in Viet Nam prior to its appearance in Houaphan at the end of November [2010], Mr Phuangsavath said. The disease quickly spread after people threw infected carcasses into rivers, he observed. When it started appearing in Aed district, provincial authorities took immediate action to contain the disease and prevent any further outbreaks. "We are required to closely monitor the transport and trading of pigs or pork and pork products at the Lao-Vietnamese border and seize and destroy pigs of unclear origin," he said. In 9 communities along the border, pig farms, vehicle tyres, markets, and slaughterhouses have been disinfected and pig herds vaccinated.

Officials are also campaigning to raise awareness about the disease and are warning people not to eat animals that have fallen ill or died from it. Villagers have also been advised to bury carcasses to prevent the disease spreading and becoming an epidemic. If anyone comes across a case of the mouth infection they should report it immediately to the provincial livestock and fisheries sector via their local village office. No new cases of infection have been reported recently but some deaths are still occurring among animals already infected, Mr Phuangsavath said. For the next few months, provincial authorities are required to monitor the situation closely in Aed district to ensure the outbreak is permanently eradicated.

Unusual activity of the Earth's Magnetosphere was observed and reported today as a "minor" G1 geomagnetic storm occurred. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center began issuing onset warnings at 1330 UTC (7:30 a.m. CST) with a "Geomagnetic K-index of 4 expected."The following images are from the archives of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NiCT) website of the Real-time Magnetosphere Simulation These Real-time images of the earth's magnetosphere are reproduced by the real-time magnetosphere simulation system. The "movie" of today's activity can be found here

7 minutes later, the K-index of 4 was reached.

11 minutes later SWPC posted that the G1 storm had begun with a "Geomagnetic K-index of 5 expected."The warning was in effect until 1800 UTC (noon CST). 8 minutes later, SWPC posted that the Geomagnetic K-index of 5 threshold had been reached and issued an active warning for a G1 geomagnetic storm.

Approximately 3 and one quarter hours later, the SWPC posted that the warning originally predicted to end at 1800 UTC (noon CST) was being extended until "2010 Dec 29 0600 UTC" (midnight CST). The activity was persistent.

spaceweather.com has reported "High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. During the early hours of Dec. 28th, the sun's magnetic field near Earth tipped south, opening a crack in Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind poured and sparked a G1-class (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm. Observers are reporting ground currents and intensifying Northern Lights in Scandinavia."
It will be interesting to see the auroral fields and effects, which can be observed here (Go - Images -> Showing -> Drop down - Auroras) The Kiruna All-Sky camera (same link) has started showing some activity, as does the Auroral Oval chart.

The storm certainly showed up in the satellite environment chart from NOAA, as seen below:

SOHO partical monitor also registered a spike:

Shockplotter is a project of the University of Maryland which uses near-real time solar wind and other data from the Charge, Element, Isotope Analysis System (CELIAS) experiment on SOHO. SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Observatory) is a joint European Space Agency, United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration mission. It also uses data from the Mass Time-of-Flight spectrometer (MTOF), and PM sensor on the SOHO spacecraft. The Shockplotter project uses this data to attempt to identify possible interplanetary shocks. Shockplotter stated a 68% confidence level of a zone 2 forward shock 28 Dec 2010, 1445 UTC (9:45 a.m. CST).
As of this writing at approaching 29 Dec 2010, 0400 UTC, there have been no new alerts. However, a peek at the Real-time Magnetosphere Simulator shows that it's not all calm yet.

There is certainly enough going on out there lately to warrant continued observation. Stories abound about concerns with the activity of good 'ol Sol, and what it means for us. Here's one just today, Space weather: Forecasters keep eye on looming 'Solar Max'

Further observations of the possibly probable pending general all-round smack down of the planet will be ongoing, and reported as needed.

Unusual activity of the Earth's Magnetosphere was observed for the second time in 10 days and was reported today as a "minor" G1 geomagnetic storm. I noticed a bit of activity in the early morning as the image below illustrates, but things calmed down for most of the rest of the day. Check out the "movie" of the day's activity to see the weird bumpy thing (technical term) move on just the one side that's in the area denoted below. That was weird,, check it out.

Then, things started heating up around 1700, or so.

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center began issuing onset warnings 2011 Jan 06 2210 UTC (approx 4:00 pm CST) with a "Geomagnetic K-index of 4 expected."

37 minutes later, the K-index of 4 was reached.

20 minutes later at 2011 Jan 06 2305 UTC, SWPC issued a warning of the onset of a G1 - Minor storm with a Geomagnetic K-index of 5 expected. The warning was in effect until 2011 Jan 07 1600 (10 am CST)

The above images are from the archives of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NiCT) website of the Real-time Magnetosphere Simulation These Real-time images of the earth's magnetosphere are reproduced by the real-time magnetosphere simulation system. The official "movie" of today's activity can be found here
But, you can also see the combination of the 6th and 7th UTC at MrTheWatcher2's Channel here.
In checking the Plasma Temperature and Density at Geostationary Orbit and AE Index, which can be found here, you can see the two data charts below...

[IMG][IMG]

spaceweather.com has reported " As expected, a solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field during the early hours of Jan. 7th. The impact sparked a G1-class (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm and bright auroras around the Arctic Circle."
It will be interesting to see the auroral fields and effects, which can be observed here (Go - Images -> Showing -> Drop down - Auroras) The Kiruna All-Sky camera (same link) is always interesting.
The storm certainly showed up in the NOAA K index chart, as seen below: And it hasn't calmed all the way down since.

The entire satellite environment reflected the hit, as seen below.

Shockplotter's report is below...but this event was not identified on the Shockplotter website as of this writing.

As of this writing at approaching 01/08/2011 03:00:00 UT, there have been no new alerts. However, a peek at the Real-time Magnetosphere Simulator shows that it's not all calm yet.

There is still certainly enough going on out there lately to warrant continued observation.

Further ordinary observations of the possibly probable pending general all-round smack down of the planet will be ongoing, and respectfully reported as needed.
