The Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event, which occurred approximately 65.5 million years ago (Ma) at the end of the Maastrichtian, was a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time. Widely known as the K–T extinction event, it is associated with a geological signature known as the K–T boundary, usually a thin band of sedimentation found in various parts of the world. K is the traditional abbreviation for the Cretaceous Period derived from the German name Kreidezeit, and T is the abbreviation for the Tertiary Period (a historical term for the period of time now covered by the Paleogene and Neogene periods). The event marks the end of the Mesozoic Era and the beginning of the Cenozoic Era.[1] With "Tertiary" being discouraged as a formal time or rock unit by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, the K–T event is now called the Cretaceous–Paleogene (or K–Pg) extinction event by many researchers.[2]

Non-avian dinosaur fossils are found only below the K–T boundary, indicating that non-avian dinosaurs became extinct during the boundary event.[3] A very small number of dinosaur fossils have been found above the K–T boundary, but they have been explained as reworked, that is, fossils that have been eroded from their original locations then preserved in later sedimentary layers.[4][5][6] Mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs and many species of plants and invertebrates also became extinct. Mammalian clades passed through the boundary with few extinctions, and evolutionary radiation from those Maastrichtian clades occurred well past the boundary. Rates of extinction and radiation varied across different clades of organisms.[7]

Scientists theorize that the K–T extinctions were caused by one or more catastrophic events, such as massive asteroid impacts (like the Chicxulub impact), or increased volcanic activity. Several impact craters and massive volcanic activity, such as that in the Deccan traps, have been dated to the approximate time of the extinction event. These geological events may have reduced sunlight and hindered photosynthesis, leading to a massive disruption in Earth's ecology. Other researchers believe the extinction was more gradual, resulting from slower changes in sea level or climate.[7] On March 4, 2010, a panel of 41 scientists agreed that the Chicxulub asteroid impact triggered the mass extinction.[8]

I've recently heard about the discovery of comet Elenin, which is scheduled to come close to earth around October-November 2011 – Is it possible it will be an extinction level event? AND Comet Elenin: How close to earth will it get? And can we expect it to cause any damage? AND I have read that Russian scientists are now predicting that asteroid Apophis will impact the Earth April 13 2036 causing terrible damage. I understand that the Russians are planning a mission to stop the asteroid.


Both Comet Elenin and Asteroid Apophis are real, but these concerns about collisions are without foundation. Unfortunately there are a few popular websites that are known for suggesting multiple catastrophes, including popularizing the 2012 hoax. Two that show up in any search for “Comet Elenin” are godlikeproductions and abovetopsecret, both of which predict either a very close pass by Earth or a collision. If instead you consult dependable websites like wikipedia and skyandtelescope you will find that Comet Elenin will come nowhere near the Earth. At its closest (in mid-October) it will be about 30 million km from our planet. There is no mystery about the comet’s path, and it is irresponsible to suggest that it is a threat. In the past few days another silly rumor has appeared on godlikeproductions. They claim that the comet's discoverer, Russian amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin, does not exist, and the name is a code based on ELE = Extinction Level Event. This is not only wrong but crazy. Do they think that if anyone really wanted to keep this comet secret they would use an obvious code like this to tell us that it was likely to hit Earth? Truly weird! Concerning asteroid Apophis, the report of Russian scientist predictions of an impact is false. Apparently it is a reworking of issues that scientists were discussing 2-3 years ago, when for a time it was thought that there was a very small chance of a collision with Apophis in 2036, but recent improvements in our knowledge of the orbit now exclude the possibility. This story about a Russian prediction has been repeated so often that NASA actually made a public correction in an interview with JPL scientist Don Yeomans, who leads the NASA Near Earth Object Program Office. The lesson here is to know your sources of information. Wikipedia is almost always accurate, and so are the government NASA and NOAA and Geologic Survey websites. In contrast, there are many conspiracy theory websites that are usually misleading or wrong. Please try to learn the difference so you won’t get upset or worried over nothing.

Are you claiming that the Earthquake in Tokyo and Comet Elenin are Coincidences. you gotta admit!..Someone Predicts an Earthquake..basing it on elenin orbit..and it happens...Isnt it worth re-evaluating some math? AND You have written that astronomers would track an incoming object for years before it hit the earth, yet Comet Elenin was discovered only 4 months ago. Elenin is still not being reported in the mainstream news. If Elenin is not large enough to be acting on our planet, is it possible that something else is out there that might have caused this earthquake In my experience things dont just happen. Something usually causes things to happen AND Have you anything to add to your post where you denied that the comet would cause a large shift in the rotation axis of the Earth and produce mega earthquakes on March 15?


Responding in reverse order, no I don't have anything to add to my previous posting on Comet Elenin, which is a rather ordinary small comet that never comes close to the Earth. It is so small that it is unlikely to be visible to the naked eye even when it is closest in September and October 2011. Unless the comet brightens substantially, I do not expect to answer any more questions about. If you want more information, you can look it up in Wikipedia. My references to discovery taking place years in advance refer to near earth asteroids, which come close to the earth repeatedly, and to planet sized objects, which can be seen at great distances. Comets are rarely discovered more than a year before they are closest to Earth. Concerning any connection between this tiny object and the March 10 earthquake, there is none. Scientific explanations depend on cause and effect. This comet can have no gravitational or electrical effect on Earth. It is only a few kilometers in diameter, and comets don't have magnetic fields. Also remember that there was no large change in the rotation axis of Earth. Equally important, earthquakes are not caused by external force, either gravity or electromagnetic, nor by changes in the axis of rotation. Earthquakes are a natural product of the active geology associated with plate tectonics. This was an ordinary earthquake (although an exceptionally large one) on one of the most active fault systems in the world, as the residents of Japan well know. This is the same fault system that killed even more people in the great Yokohama quake and fire in the 1920s. If you have any doubt about the nature and cause of earthquakes, please refer to any geology book, or just look up plate tectonics and earthquake in Wikipedia. And please, to all my readers, note that I intend to cut back on on postings dealing with pseudoscience. This is Ask an Astrobiologist, and I am here to answer questions about real science, especially Astrobiology.

Question

Will the world really going to end in 2012? I believe this because the authorities are not saying anything about this because they don't want the people to panic by hearing the truth.


Dear readers, please think about this illogical question from an individual who seems to be deeply alienated. He is saying that he believes in the end of the world because the "authorities" deny it. I wonder, if he believes this, why he would write to NASA? If I deny the end the world, apparently that will reinforce his fears. For perspective, here are several logically equivalent statements. (1) Last night I saw a bright light in the sky. Since there were no reports about this in the newspapers or TV news, I am now convinced I saw an alien spaceship. (2) All the weather reports say it will be clear and sunny tomorrow, therefore I believe we will have a hurricane. (3) There are reports from China that some people have seen two suns in the sky. All the astronomers deny this, so I think it must be true. (4) There is a beautiful girl in my neighborhood. She has never spoken to me or even looked at me, therefore I know she is really in love with me.

I read that Nasa was searching for a tenth planet in the early 1990's and some think it was Nibiru and predicted it to hit earth in May 2003 but since that didn't happen they changed it to December 2012 because thats the next closest "doomsday". Where did that planet go that Nasa was looking for?


That is an inaccurate statement, but I can easily believe that you found this sort of thing on conspiracy theory or doomsday websites. Let me briefly explain. NASA was not searching for a tenth planet (Planet X) in the early 1990s, although scientists have been very curious to see what they can find in the outer solar system. Starting in the middle 1990s, astronomers such as David Jewitt at Hawaii and Mike Brown at Caltech started using very large telescopes to discover objects in the outer solar system beyond Neptune (in a region called the Kuiper Belt). Several of these were similar in size to Pluto. When Mike Brown discovered Eris, which is slightly larger than Pluto, journalists began to call this the tenth planet. But about five years ago Eris and Pluto and other similar icy objects were reclassified as dwarf planets. Let me stress again that this research was not done by NASA, and it had nothing to do with Nibiru. Remember that the fictitious planet Nibiru was supposed to be larger than the Earth and to be on an elongated orbit that brought it into the inner solar system every 3600 years. If any object this large existed, it would have been found in astronomical surveys, and besides, the stability of the orbits of Earth and Moon and Mars proves that no rogue planet has been in the inner solar system for millions of years (if ever). The Nibiru thread, in which 'psychic' Nancy Lieder first predicted Nibiru would encounter Earth in May 2003, later revised to December 2012, is pure fiction. It has nothing to do with the search for real planets in the outer solar system. To summarize, astronomers, not NASA, have discovered not one but dozens of dwarf planets. These scientific discoveries had nothing to do with Nibiru or doomsday predictions, which are part of the world of fantasy, not of science. The worlds of science and pseudoscience hardly overlap. I know from personal experience that very few scientists have even heard of Nibiru or 2012 doomsday predictions. And very few of the doomsday prophets have any idea what real science is about. They live in a world of fantasy, unconstrained by facts.

Question

I have several questions about solar flares. (1) Do all large magnetic solar flares come straight down from the sun. (2) Does it penetrate concrete? Steel? (3) Will disconnecting the electrical, telephone and TV cables stop the solar flare from coming inside the structures? (4) Does aluminum foil or sheets protect equipment from the flares? How can I protect my electrical and technology equipment from them?


A solar flare is an explosion on the surface of the Sun that gets its energy from an electrical discharge. Look it up in Wikipedia. (1) A solar flare stays on the surface of the Sun. It does not come to Earth. A flare emits a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, including visible, ultraviolet and x-rays. These follow straight lines just like any light rays. The ultraviolet and x rays are stopped by the atmosphere and cannot reach the surface of the Earth. (2) Rays from solar flares cannot penetrate the atmosphere or even a sheet of paper, let alone concrete or steel. However, many flares are accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) consisting of charged atomic particles such as protons and electrons. These do not follow straight lines. They may or may not reach the vicinity of the Earth depending on the geometry. They can damage unprotected orbiting satellites, but they are stopped by the Earth's magnetosphere and atmosphere and do not reach the surface. (3) Electrical currents produced in Earth's upper atmosphere can induce currents in large systems on Earth such as electric power distribution systems. I cannot imagine that they would damage your home electrical appliances. (4) You don't need to take any precautions. Normal solar flares or CMEs have no effect on the ground. In extreme cases they could damage electric power distribution systems and cause power outages, but such cases are very rare. Remember that the next solar maximum is predicted to be smaller than usual. In that case it will have no effects on you or your electric systems. There are many false scare stories out there that contribute to public concern about the Sun. Try to ignore this misinformation.

Why was C2010 X1 Elenin discovered so late? If an object was approaching to earth, you should have found it several month ago, right? I found in your posted answer that you use many "about". So why can you say it would pass earth at a distance of about 21 million miles?


Please don't confuse the warning time for asteroids with that for comets. In several previous answers I have discussed the Spaceguard Survey and the fact that it is designed to provide many years of warning for any near earth asteroid (NEA) that might be on a collision course with Earth. We can carry out such a comprehensive survey for asteroids because their orbits bring them frequently within range of our telescopes. NEAs typically have orbital periods between 6 and 24 months. Comets, in contrast, come from deep space. The orbital period for Comet Elenin is about 10,000 years, so obviously we have had no previous opportunity to observe it or to calculate its orbit. Hence it was not discovered until December 2010, and there is still some uncertainty in its orbit; in this case, the closest distance to Earth is 21 +/- 1 million miles. That still tells you that it will miss our planet by a very large margin. There is zero chance that it will come close to Earth, let alone hit us. Non-scientists often have trouble understanding scientific calculations. Usually there is some uncertainty, but this in no way should make you suspicious of the result. Most scientific calculations are presented with an uncertainty or margin of error. This is just being honest. It is nonscientists who sometimes pretend absolute accuracy and don't seem to recognize the meaning of scientific uncertainty.

Question

There are reports and photos from all over the world about two suns. Why is this not in the mainstream media? AND. Here are links to Reports from China of two suns. These photos look real to me. Please don't lie. AND There was a yellow second sun seen in New Zealand before the big Earthquake. Why are governments keeping this a secret? In the US FEMA is buying supplies and preparing for a big disaster. I am very frightened.


Please, let's all use a little common sense. If there was a second sun in the sky we could all see it. It would not appear in one country like China or New Zealand. Have you stepped outside, away from your computer, and looked up to see if there are two suns in the sky? I am amazed that anyone would post such absurd lies, but even more that anyone would take such reports seriously. How can a computer-literate person write to me about two suns without looking for themselves? It boggles my mind.

I saw your 4 minute video on youtube concerning the 2012 claims. I liked how you said "if Nibiru were real it would be tracked by thousands of amateur astronomers" I am an amateur astronomer. I have searched for this planet (knowing it is completely fake) just to prove the Nibiru believers wrong. Yet nothing appears. Anyways, I have a question about the andromeda galaxy. I have been trying to observe it with my telescope but I can't find it. would it be because of light pollution? I live in Los Angeles


The Andromeda Galaxy is a large diffuse patch, bigger than the Moon in apparent size. Since the surface brightness is low, it is extremely difficult to see through a telescope, in spite of its spectacular appearance on long-exposure photos. The best way see it is with binoculars, but you still need a moderately dark site. I have found that one of the quickest ways to get an idea of the sky pollution level is to look for the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye. The Andromeda Galaxy is easily visible from a really dark site on a moonless night, but in most cities it is impossible to see. Slightly brighter are the two closest galaxies, the Magellenic Clouds in the southern hemisphere sky, but they too are quickly lost in the presence of light pollution.

Question

The nuclear crisis in Japan really scare me, is it going to hit or harm the USA? Is everything going to explode? Please help me. AND How is all the radiation from Japan's nuclear plants going to affect Earth's atmosphere? I am sure this will contribute to climate change but how much. AND. Are the current nuclear explosions in Japan going to harm our planet? Does this mean the world is getting ready to come to an end in 2012?



As I write this we don't know how much radioactive material will be released from the Fukushima nuclear generation plants that were damaged by the March 10 earthquake and tsunami. There is some leakage of radioactive material from damaged reactors and storage pools for spent nuclear fuel, both of which which require large amounts of cooling water. It is probable that the damage will be much less than the two largest previous nuclear accidents. The first was the Kyshtym disaster of 29 September 1957 near the city of Chelyabinsk in the USSR. An explosion in a nuclear a waste storage site contaminated about 15,000 square miles. Equally serious was the explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear plant near Kiev in Ukraine, which was then part of the USSR, on 26 April 1986. You can read about both of these accidents in Wikipedia. I visited the site of the Kyshtym event in 1994, and I intend to visit Chernobyl in May of this year. Fortunately even very bad accidents can be cleaned up. The primary danger is local, from radioactive material released into the atmosphere. This can have no effect on weather or climate. I do not see any way it could harm the planet. And it has nothing to do with 2012. For perspective, note that all of these nuclear accidents have added less radioactive material to the atmosphere than was done intentionally in the atomic weapons tests carried out between 1945 and 1962.

It is reported that the moon will near the earth in the shortest distance of 221567 miles in March 19th. The moon on that day is called the Supermoon. It has caused the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2005 and the tornado in Dawin Australia in 1974. Will it cause some disaster like earthquake or tsunami?



This new threat is one of the silliest ideas circulating in this season of Internet craziness. (Of course the supermoon on March 19 will not matter if we are all killed in a massive pole shift on March 15, which is another equally crazy rumor.) The whole idea of a supermoon is flawed. The Moon's perihelion (closest position to Earth) is the same in every orbit. It comes no closer this March than it did in January or February or any other month. The only difference is that the closest approach coincides with the full moon, but so what? The phases of the Moon just tell us the relative positions of the Sun and Moon and have no effect on us. The so-called supermoon is a non-effect. Further, there is no evidence that the Moon is associated with anything on Earth except the tides. Neither earthquakes nor weather have any correlation with the position or phases of the Moon, nor would we expect any. These silly rumors about March 19 are coming from people who have no understanding of the realities of science. I am writing this from the annual Lunar and Planetary Science conference attended by about 1500 top scientists who study our solar system. We are spending a week reporting on and discussing fascinating new science, including spectacular high resolution images from the NASA Lunar Orbiter, two space missions that have recently had close encounters with comets, and a flood of exciting new information about the planet Mars and Saturn's moons and rings. Not one person (neither scientists not journalists) has mentioned 2012 doomsday, or Nibiru, or pole shifts, or supermoons, or any of the other weird ideas that circulate widely on the Internet. The fact is that the world of science does not intersect with the world of pseudoscience. It is a jolt for me to shift attention from discussing exciting new scientific discoveries with my colleagues to the sad questions I receive every day from people who fear imaginary threats like Nibiru or pole shifts or supermoons.

Wrong. The idea that the polar ice caps in Antarctica and Greenland would take a thousand years to melt comes from a simplistic calculation that considers only evaporation from the surface. In truth, the summer melt-water is sinking to the base of the glaciers and lubricating the flow of ice to the sea. The many icebergs formed this way float away into warmer water and melt. Also the warmer ocean, as it rises, penetrates under ice shelves and eats at them from below. Thus the main loss of ice is from melting in seawater. Scientists recognize these processes that remove ice rapidly, but the global warming deniers like to trot out the old idea that evaporation from the surface will limit the loss rate of the polar ice caps.

NBC News reports that the poles are shifting rapidly. The report on the news today said the earth shifted 3 degrees and the rotation changed due to the quake on March 11th. The poles are melting, volcanic activity and seismic activity is off the charts. A once in 1000 year earthquake has happened 3 times in the last couple years. Something is happening to our planet. If Comet Elenin is not causing these disasters, what is? Is there something else out there? AND The news reports that that the quake has shifted the Earth on its axis by 16 cm and that it affected the Earth's equilibrium and that the duration of a day has decreased by 1.8 microseconds. What does it mean? Is it a threat to us? Is it true that seismic activity is increasing? Can a quake move Earth out of its rotation orbit?


The March 10 earthquake off the coast of Japan was a a terrible natural disaster, but many of the rumors circulating on the Internet are deceptive. Please try to put this earthquake in perspective. The poles (rotational or magnetic) are not shifting rapidly or doing anything else unusual. The report you quote of a 3 degree shift is absurd; I am sure you heard that wrong (like maybe it said 3 inches not 3 degrees). It is false to say that 3 one-in-a-thousand-year earthquakes have happened in the last couple of years. This was one of 5 earthquakes of magnitude 9 or greater in the past century, meaning that there were 4 others larger, and that earthquakes this size happen about every 20-25 years. Look at the USGS seismic statistics and you will see there has been no increase in earthquake frequency or severity. There has also been no increase in volcanic eruptions. It has been almost 20 years since the last big volcanic eruption. The reported tiny changes in the position of the rotational pole and the length of the day have not been measured directly because they are too small, less than one part in a billion. The changes represent the conservation of angular momentum as a small part of the crust moved up or down. The same thing happens when large glaciers form or melt. Most important, none of this, neither the Earthquake itself nor the tiny changes in the Earth's rotation, are the result of any exterior force. These are geological events that are a central element of plate tectonics, as one plate slips beneath another along the Japan trench. The idea that Comet Elenin (which is tiny and very far away) had anything to do with it is as absurd now as when I posted an answer on March 1. Similarly, no geological event like an Earthquake can have any effect on the orbit of the Earth. Please don't cheapen the tragedy of this earthquake in Japan by mixing it up with pseudoscience conspiracy theories.

Can you please tell me what are the conseqences of the earth's axis being moved 25cm by the latest earth quake? Do the days get shorter or season times change? AND Is the Japan earthquake and tsunami the start of the predicted polar shift?


No one has measured any change in the Earth's rotation axis, but some scientists are making estimates based on displacement of the crust in the big Japan earthquake of March 10. With a magnitude of 8.9, this is the fourth or fifth largest earthquake since good seismic records began to be kept about a century ago. The estimate I saw for this displacement is 8-10 cm. That is only about 1 part in a billion of the Earth's circumference. This is an extraordinarily small movement, and it would be very difficult to detect or measure. The second question, referring to a polar shift (that is, a large change in the rotation axis), is one of the silliest ideas in this season of Internet silliness, yet I receive this question all the time, sometimes several in one day. Let me state as clearly as I can that a large or catastrophic shift in the tilt of the Earth's rotation pole is IMPOSSIBLE. It has never happened and it never will. Anyone who predicts a coming polar shift is either a fool or a liar.

There is documented scientific fact that the Earth's magnetic pole reversal is happening now. Some places in the southern Atlantic Ocean, it has already reversed. There is also scientific proof that the Earth's magnetic field is becoming weaker as the Core cools (resulting in the Core's diameter increasing and the speed of spin slowing down). Scientist agree that the Earth's atmosphere is held in place by the Earth's gravity and magnetic field. If our Sun has a very high output of solar flares and coronal mass ejection in 2012, which is predicted by scientists, and the Earth's magnetic field is weak enough during the documented pole reversal fact, it is possible for the Earth's atmosphere to be blown away by solar winds. If this happens, you know that all life on our Earth would not last very long. This data that you call nonsense is being reported by geologists, geophysicists, astrophysicist, etc.. Are you saying that they are all lying? If you do not respond to my questions, I will consider your answer is Yes and that we are in danger.


Every one of these “facts” or “data” is wrong. I am confident that these things have not been said or predicted by legitimate “geologists, geophysicists, astrophysicist, etc.” I suspect you got them from Internet sites that have nothing to do with real science (although they may claim to be scientific). Briefly, here are my replies, and a plea for common sense: (1) There is no magnetic reversal happening now. The Earth’s magnetic field is not behaving strangely. []Error. The magnetic field has been slowly declining for several decades, but this is well within the usual range of variability. (2) While the Earth's magnetic field is generated in the outer core, it is not connected to the size of the core. Besides, the timescale for changes in the size or temperature of the core is hundreds of millions of years. (3) The Earth’s atmosphere is held in place by gravity, just like that of other planets. The magnetic field plays little if any role. For example, Venus, a planet almost the same size as Earth, has no magnetic field but an atmosphere about 100 times thicker than that of Earth. (4) The prediction for solar activity in this cycle is that the peak will be lower than usual, not higher, as I have reported here many times. (5) The idea that the Earth’s atmosphere could be torn away by solar activity is crazy. Please use common sense. The Earth's magnetic field has reversed hundreds, probably thousands, or times in the past. Isn't it obvious that the atmosphere was not stripped away and life ended by solar activity during any of these reversals? The fact that we are here shows that there is no risk of losing our atmosphere or harming life on Earth. I should add that I do not appreciate your final statement, that if I don’t answer, it means these ideas are correct. I receive several comments or questions every day making absurd claims. I do not have the time to criticize every crackpot website out there. I try to answer questions about real science. I also try to promote critical thinking, to help my readers distinguish for themselves between science and pseudoscience. You should all be laughing at silly claims like these, not worrying about them.

I just got a book that states there are a bunch of new planets just found. How are away are they? Do you think they would support life? What kinda telescope did they use to find them ?


The new exoplanets were discovered by the NASA Kepler telescope: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler_(spacecraft)] and [http://kepler.nasa.gov/]. Until 1995, astronomers knew of no planets outside our solar system. The most recent data release from the Kepler mission raises the number of known or candidate exoplanets above 1500, with more being found every day (literally!). Not all of these planet candidates are real; as many as 25 percent remain unconfirmed, and more work will be needed to weed out false positives. But the statistics are still valid, showing that 10-20 percent of stars have planetary systems. The Kepler spacecraft stares continuously at a spot in the constellation of Cygnus -- just 1/400 of the total area of the sky. It detects the small drop in brightness when a planet transits in front of a star, blocking a tiny fraction of its light. The objective is to determine the frequency of planetary systems and to provide an unbiased picture of the sizes and orbital distribution of planets. If anyone expected other planet systems to look like ours, with four inner rocky planets and four outer giants, the new discoveries will open their eyes to an incredible variety. These planets are pretty far away, many hundreds of light years. A few might support life; we don’t yet know. Remember that no one has yet seen these planets, but only detected them by their effect on the light of their host star. But this is just the beginning of one of the most remarkable periods of discovery in the history of astronomy.

How did ancient civilizations know about planets? Knowing about stars are one thing because they looked up at these every night and followed them for multiple reasons. But how could they tell the difference between planets and stars with the lack of equipment back then? Did they actually have a scientific method in telling the difference between the two?

Scientists recently discovered a planet known called Tyche in the outer solar system, they say its about 4 times the size of jupiter, that is what nibiru is exactly said to look like. They also say it is in the outer solar system and dislodging comets out of their orbits, thats what people say nibiru does, it has a strong gravitational pull that could pull earth too. So.. is this planet Tyche really the scientific name for Nibiru and is it going to come into the inner solar system and have gravitational effects on the earth?


This supposed giant planet in the Oort comet cloud certainly is not Nibiru, and it probably does not even exist. I have received several questions like this in the past week, so I guess this rumor is appearing on conspiracy theory websites. No one has seen this planet, and it is only a suggestion made this year by two scientists at the University of Louisiana as a possible explanation for the observed distribution of orbits of comets that are coming from the Oort cloud. It was not detected by the WISE infrared survey or any previous sky survey. I doubt that is real, but even if it were, the association with Nibiru is fantasy. Its distance is estimated as 15,000 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun — that is almost 400 times farther than Pluto, or about a thousand billion miles. The mythical planet Nibiru, if you believe the stories about it, is on a 3600-year orbit that brings it into the inner solar system and is headed for an encounter with Earth two years from now. They could hardly be more different. Please use a little common sense. The name "Tyche" is not any more real than the object, and it is certainly not the "scientific name" for Nibiru. Also, your claim that Tyche exerts a gravitational effect on the Earth is nonsense. And the idea that this object, if it exists, could come into the inner solar system is also nonsense. The stability of inner planet orbits shows that no large perturbing mass has been in the inner solar system for millions of years, if ever.

I am pleased to see a specific prediction of a pole shift on March 15, 2011, just a couple of weeks from now. I hope when March 15 comes and nothing happens, you will write back to me. Gullible people can find almost any crazy story on the Internet, like the ones you quote. One way to learn to be more skeptical and to think critically is to see for yourself that the predicted disasters don't happen. It is only another month till the April 1, 2011, date when some people have been saying that the end of the world will begin. There is also a prediction that the "rapture" will occur on May 21, when all the good people will suddenly abandon their bodies. We will see. The Internet is full of misinformation and lies, but no one has to believe them. Smart people know to check these stores using responsible websites like Wikipedia and (yes) NASA.

So what the deal with comet elenin, there does not seem to be too much credible information. Everyone seems to be freaking out about it, but no one even knows how big it is. Does this comet pose a threat and what is its size and nature? AND I have read about comet Elenin and how some nasa people want to keep it a secret. what are the chances of it coming to earth and what threat does it bring with it, and has this comet got anything to do with 2012 hoax? AND Elinin is only .117 au from earth on mar 11,2011. From march 8 to mar 15, 2011, what are the chances that Elinin either impacts us, or gets close enough to cause a major catastrophy. Please be honest.


I have been receiving many questions about Comet Elenin. Many of them refer to the outrageous lies on some conspiracy theory websites, which are amplified by people who seem to think this comet is highly unusual. It is not unusual, and it is not a threat to Earth. See the Wikipedia article on this comet [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2010_X1] for more information. C2010 X1 Elenin (to give its full name) is a long-period comet, which takes about 10,000 years to complete one orbit around the Sun. It was discovered with a robotic telescope in New Mexico on 10 December 2010 by Russian amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin. When comets or asteroids are first discovered, their orbits are quite uncertain; usually it takes several months of observations to firmly establish the orbit. Elenin's perihelion (closest to the Sun) is in early September 2011 at a distance from the Sun of 40-45 million miles. It will be closest to Earth on about 16 October, at a distance of about 21 million miles, which is nearly a hundred times farther than the Moon. The comet never comes close to the Earth, but it is expected to be visible in binoculars during August and October. Part of the Internet chatter concerns its size. Comets are exceedingly small and enveloped in a tenuous cloud of gas and dust, so the only way to be sure of their actual dimensions is to visit with a spacecraft. Half a dozen comets have been the target of spacecraft missions, and all of them (even Comet Halley) are less than 10 km in diameter. There is no reason to think Elenin is any different. This means its mass is less than one billionth the mass of the Earth. Needless to say, we will not be aware of the tiny gravitational pull from Elenin. In spite of these simple facts, some websites (such as godlikeproductions) are making wild claims that Elenin will hit the Earth, or disturb our orbit, or cause tides, or interact with our magnetic field. Such claims are pure fiction. One of the worst examples is a video that someone posted on the NASAbuzzroom website that claims that the magnetic field of the comet will cause a large shift in the rotation axis of the Earth and produce mega-earthquakes on March 15, 2011. It is hard to imagine anyone would take this seriously. Comets don't have magnetic fields, and magnetic fields can't change the rotation axis or cause earthquakes no matter how large they are. Adding to the craziness is a claim that this same comet caused the Earth's axis to shift by 3 degrees in February 2010 and caused the Chile Earthquake. These are simply lies; the comet was far away a year ago, and there was no change whatever in Earth's rotation axis. The Chile earthquake was a normal slippage in an active fault that has produced many previous earthquakes, including the one witnessed by Charles Darwin in 1835. Please remember that just because someone says he or she is from NASA doesn't make it true. Many people who post YouTube videos lie about their affiliation. Incidentally, only NASA is allowed to use the NASA logo, the blue circle with the word NASA and a satellite orbiting around it.

AND (2) Why did IHC scientist in 2004 say there was a 94% chance the earth would end? It scares me so badly. Why are so many people for 2012, when NASA is against it? AND (3) I think you guys should remove this 2009 june video of perdictions of what should come in future because its totaly rong now that we found that planet and solar system. This guy looks retarded talking about it like it was never there -- its making nasa look dum controdicking itself.


These questions call for another discussion of critical thinking -- a skill that is essential to succeed in the modern world. (1) Refers to an article from November 1, 2010, about a place in France called Bugarach Mountain that has an influx of people the locals call "the esoterics," people who believe that the end of the world is coming. The article quotes some of these visitors, like the one who said "The apocalypse we believe in is the end of a certain world and the beginning of another, a new spiritual world." There is nothing in the article to suggest that anything will happen in December 2012. There is a big difference between reporting that some people have crazy ideas and endorsing them. It is important to make this distinction. (2) The IHC (Institute for Human Continuity) was part of the marketing campaign that preceded the release of the movie "2012". There is no such thing as an IHC scientist. It is entirely fictional. At the time (two years ago) these ads confused many people, but I am surprised that they still have any credibility. If you look on the Web, Yahoo and Wikipedia tell this story accurately. It is important to learn where to go for accurate information. (3) Many people have thanked me for putting my 4-minute commentary on the 2012 hoax on the Internet, but this questioner seems to think my information has been proven wrong. I can't imagine where he gets the idea "that planet" (presumably Nibiru or Planet X) has been found or that NASA is contradicting itself. Please remember that anyone can go on the Internet or YouTube and claim to work for NASA or to be speaking for NASA. There is no law against lying on the Internet, and many people do just that. As for my video, it is still valid, and in the past two years the evidence against the 2012 hoax has only increased.

Ele ชื่อนี้ปรากฏในภาพยนต์เรื่อง Deep Impact
ความจริงแล้วผมไม่คิดว่าเป็นเรื่องบังเอิญนะ
มันทำให้เราคิดไปว่านี่แสดงว่าเขารู้มานานแล้ว หรือว่านี่ทำกันเป็นขบวนการ
เขาสร้างออกมาเป็นหนังให้เราดูตั้งแต่ปี 1998 นั่นคือล่วงหน้า 13 ปี

ในเรื่อง Deep Impact
นักข่าวสาวพยายามขุดคุ้ยความลับเกี่ยวกับผู้หญิงที่ชื่อว่า Ele (เอลี่)
ซึ่งตอนแรกนักข่าวเข้าใจว่าเป็นเรื่องชู้สาว
ผู้หญิงที่ชื่อ Ele มีความสัมพันธ์แบบลับๆเชิงชู้สาวกับรัฐมนตรีคลังหรือประธานาธิบดี
นักข่าวถูก FBI เชิญตัวแกมบังคับไปพบประธานาธิบดี
ประธานาธิบดีขอร้องให้อย่าเพิ่งออกข่าวและจะมีการแถลงข่าวในอีก 2 วันข้างหน้า
ในฉากนี้จะเห็นว่ามีการกักตุนอาหารหรือน้ำดื่มด้วย

นักข่าวลองเสริชหาข้อมูลของหญิงสาวที่ชื่อว่า Ele
ปรากฎว่าไม่เจอ แต่ไปเจอเรื่องเกี่ยวกับการสูญพันธ์ของไดโนเสาร์จากการที่ดาวเคราะห์หรือดาวหางพุ่งชนโลก

ต่อมาประธานาธิบดีจึงแถลงข่าว
ปรากฏว่าเรื่องที่ถูกปิกปิดไม่ใช่เรื่องชู้สาว และ Ele ไม่ใช่ชื่อของผู้หญิง
แต่ Ele มาจากคำว่า E.L.E หมายถึง Extinction Level Event
หรือเหตุการณ์ (ภัยพิบัติ) ที่รุนแรงในระดับทำให้สิ่งมีชีวิตสูญพันธ์

ไม่บังเอิญหรอกครับ ผมเองดูวนสองรอบและก็เทียบกับเรื่องดาวหางเอลีนินนี้ด้วยยิ่งไม่บังเอิญอีกด้วยประการทั้งปวง ก็ต้องรอดูว่า ถ้าลองเอาวันและเดือนของทุกอย่างในหนังเรื่อง Deep Impact มาจดบันทึกไว้เพียงแต่เปลี่ยนปีให้มาเป็น ๒๐๑๑ หรือ ๒๐๑๒ ซะ มันก็จะไม่บังเอิญอีก โดยส่วนตัวผมแล้วที่ในหนังมันระเบิดแตกออกเป็นสองส่วน ส่วนแรกชนและหล่นในมหาสมุทรเกิดซูเปอร์ไทดัลเวลฟ์หรืออภิมหาซูเปอร์ค่อดซึนามิและส่วนที่สองล่ะครับ ผมว่ามันใหญ่มากๆเหมือนกับเจ้าดาวแดงเลยทีเดียว และก็เป็นเรื่องบังเอิญ (อีกแล้ว) ที่เจ้าดาวแดงนี้ทั้งรัสเซียและเมกาก็เคยคิดที่จะเอานุ๊กไปวางลงไปบนดวงดาวแดงเหมือนกันแต่ตอนหลังต้องเปลี่ยนใจเพราะไปเจอตอเข้า (สิ่งมีชีวิตที่รูปร่างใหญ่โต)
